This Is Ground Level Projects

Blikkiesdorp was built by the City of Cape Town in 2007 built in response to a court order. It contains approximately 1,600 one-room structures with a community of approximately 12 000 people counted for. This means there is an average of 7.5 residence residing in a single one bedroom structure. Ground Level Projects is here to help uplift the community through means of education, early year development , community projects and events.

GL Projects (GLP) is a sister organization of Ground Level Ministries with a primary focus on Education, Sports and Building, all in order to facilitate the empowerment of disadvantaged youth. The primary function in Blikkiesdorp started with Soup kitchen feeding in late 2011 and very soon during the third quarter of 2012 included a child care and early childhood development (ECD) function. In 2013 GLP partnered with an organization called 180 Hands-on to start sports coaching in the area. This contract was paid by GLP and GLM and lasted until 2016 when GLP employed their own supervisor/sports co-ordinator, Mr Mitchell Pawson.

The factors driving this on-going intervention are well known and our own research has shown that approximately 70% of residents are unemployed, more than 50% have no stable “Father” figure in the household and alcohol and drug use/addiction exceeds 65%. The unfortunate casualty of these statistics is youth and more specifically young children. There was a specific incident that accelerated our program where a toddler was hospitalised with “Septicaemia” and almost deceased due to chaffing from an unchanged nappy.

By the end of 2015 GLP was caring and tutoring approximately 30 young students and started to get involved with the school enrolment process as we saw that parents were failing to do so. At this time we also conducted our first “Graduation” ceremony as we launched them into their school careers.
