The ECD centre of GLP runs on a biblically based curriculum that also includes the essential elements needed to successfully prepare a child for Grade 1 including personal hygiene. We currently serve more than 50 children daily. In addition to the tuition learners are given two meals, breakfast and lunch every day.
During 2012 we obtained permission to erect a Tent out of which to conduct our activities as “school” had now started. By 2014 the tent was so weather beaten that we had to look at an alternative solution. We were granted permission by local government to replace the tent facility with a more appropriate structure. It was decided that a metal framed structure that could accommodate solid roof panels be adopted. This framework was completed at the end of 2015.
In keeping with our Local Government initiative for school enrolment we started at the start of 2016 to already enrol the 2017 learners. During this process as we discovered that some of the children did not even have birth certificates and some mothers did not even have ID documents. GLP then facilitated by way of cost and transport to get the offending mothers to the Home Affairs office to obtain the temporary ID documents and then ensure that the relevant children’s birth certificates were obtained so that they could be accepted at schools. These efforts further resulted in GLP giving full sponsorship (school fees, uniforms, books and stationery) to 12 children in 2015 and 26 children in 2016 ! Every morning the GLP vehicle transports up to 10 of these learners to school and back in the afternoons.
We are truly honoured and excited to have been nominated as the beneficiaries of the inaugural Breedenet Cape Duo Challenge. We are looking forward to sending many more of our school-ready stars to grade 1 next year…
